LP Review: Self-Titled by High Reeper

High Reeper
Are you guys high on the mary-ja-wanna?

America's love affair for substances is legendary as are the attempts to snuff it out. 15 years ago, the idea of being able to buy marijuana at a store...unheard of.

But now, places like Colorado and Washington State are seeing insanely high budgets surpluses!

Not to sound too far out, man, but if this stuff had been legal this whole time, how many more Jimi  Hendrix's, The Doors's, or Cream's would we have had?

Seriously? We'd have had absolutely zero more of those groups. Though, they and Sabbath, and The Stones, and the everybody else always used large amounts of substances, it's always been about the people taking the drugs and not the drugs taking the people.

Wait...what?

High Reeper
When it comes to the stoner metal guys, it's never really apparent if they are genuinely partaking in these substances, or not....

Though, there are a few guys in the scene who have gone clean, so if nothing else, at least they started out right?

Right? Nah... moving on.

Stoner Metal really, for the most part, is a slightly more psychedelic doom metal which is the child of Black Sabbath, who was pretty psychedelic and hippie themselves.

High Reeper picks up the mantle and gives us a fun spinning record.

Interesting factoid: No one had ever intended this group to play on a stage, but just to record some tunes and presumably go to smoke a bowl with Jay Mewes, naturally Jay Mewes Circa 1999.

After getting some of this down, they found out the same thing we did when we listened. These songs are ferocious. It hits that sweet spot between the loopy Electric Wizard sound and the just south of death metal High On Fire kind of thing.

It's heavy, but trippy. It's melodic, but vicious.

Make sure you don't get lost in the smoke.
