EP(sorta) Review: "Via" be Derhead

Via
There are times in life where it's important to remember that persistence is the key to everything.

There is nothing in my life that was done right the first time, save being a father. Seems like I totally nailed that on the first try, somehow.

The following is a list of things that have been done more than once by me: changed jobs, gotten married, purchased a house, tried writing, and be a better person.

It could be argued that every single thing in that list, if you look at only my last attempt, have been successes beyond all measure, but the earlier attempts were not as good.

The Grand Canyon is one of the most awe inspiring natural views in The United States of America, if not the entire world. The Colorado River didn't give up when a great stone blocked its path, but continued to push...

Probably Not Derhead, but who knows?
Let's start off with housekeeping and logistical stuff regarding Via.

1) Derhead is a single man by the name of Giorgio Barroccu.

He's listed as vocals, guitar, bass, and drum programming. That means the drums are a machine and not a person, but damn are they done well.

2) This album, Via, is being released by Via Nocturna. That's not really  necessary to mention, it just makes me giggle.

3) It's not precisely an EP. It's a three track 22+/- minute EP that's backended by six demo tracks.

So I don't know what this is exactly.

But in terms of the music, it's droning, morose, and nearly progressive black metal. (Which happens to be my favorite kind.) The chord patterns are relentless. Given time and a loudspeaker, they'd carve a canyon too.

But when the drones have gone on just a touch too long, they change and often become little melody lines that feature the song within a song pose.

Vocally, they are an explosion of pain. As the song titles are in English, we'll assume the lyrics are in English, but who knows? I just know how they feel to me.

Like much of what I do, Derhead is only going to appeal to a small audience, but we will love him (them, it) deeply.
